Grasshopper

Melanoplus Differentialis, Melanoplus bivittatus

Description:

They are brownish or greenish and as they age the color will darken. Some species have toxic bodies which are brightly colored. Its big leg is mainly for jumping. It makes around by rubbing their legs, but some species are unable to make sounds. This sound is a mating call and therefore, some species are brightly colored to attract their mates. Reproduce : Egg-laying: Female digs hole with abdomen. Some grasshoppers spit a brown bitter liquid as a defensive behavior in response to being handled. Use a piece of white paper and gently wipe the grasshopper's mouth if the spit is not evident. Before molting, grasshoppers do not eat and become less active. During the molt, they swallow air to build up pressure to split the old cuticle. Ecosystem Positive : As herbivores, grasshoppers link plants to the rest of the ecosystem. Frass (droppings) contribute to nutrient turnover by returning nutrients as fertilizer for the plants. They provide food for birds and other arthropods. Negative : Sometimes some species of grasshopper occur in very large numbers and cause serious crop damage and loss of plants in pastures. *Their predators are birds, lizards, mantids, spiders, and rodents eat grasshoppers. *

Habitat:

Grasshoppers lived grasslands, rain forests, fields, and tropics. According to the research, it said that the grasshopper mostly found in deserts. They normally lived in areas that have low growing plants, since they like to eat grass, leaves, and cereal crops.
