A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Bubo virginianus
Large nocturnal owl with ear tufts and wide wing span.
Found from the Arctic tundra to the tropical rainforest, from the desert to suburban backyards, the Great Horned Owl is one of the most widespread and common owls in North America.
It's nice to see that the two owls that live near my house are still around. They are no longer trying to nest, but at least they are still around and hunting! The larger female is more confident than her mate and doesn't spook as easily. She also very elusive and hides herself very well in the large cottonwoods. The smaller male is more nervous and will quickly fly away if you stop and watch for too long.

Think they are male and female
Thanks Smith's Zoo and Steve! These two are special to me because they live near my house. I am trying to wait patiently for winter, to see if they mate again! They only had one hatchling last year!
Gorgeous! I love owls!
oooh, beautiful pair.
Thank you Melissa! I miss seeing them every day! They did eventually nest again and they were gone as soon as their chick fledged!
Awesome capture!
Thank you Tanya!
What a great looking couple! It's nice to see the male and female side by side. Great photo of them.
Thanks everyone! They are a sweet couple! I hope they stick around for a while!
Nice spotting,
Beautiful...but so sad! Life must go on!
