Egretta thula
The snowy egret is a small heron, about 24 inches tall. It has distinctive yellow feet. This individual is a juvenile, as it has a yellow stripe down the back of its legs instead of pure black legs.
Along the banks of an inland fresh water canal.
Breeding Snowy Egrets grow filmy, curving plumes that once fetched astronomical prices in the fashion industry, endangering the species. Early conservationists rallied to protect egrets by the early twentieth century, and this species has rebounded and is protected by law in the US.
