A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ambystoma opacum
Marbled salamanders have been reported to have relatively long life spans, 8–10 years or more. The females lay and guard their eggs in October, well before other salamanders lay their eggs in February or so. The marbled salamander larvae hatch much earlier and then prey on the other salamanders. We saw one mother under a small log and later two more females sharing a hiding place under a board left in the forest. The colors are different in the photos as two different cameras were used.
