Carduelis tristis
The only finch in its subfamily which undergoes a complete molt, the American Goldfinch displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is a vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter months, while the female is a dull yellow-brown shade which brightens only slightly during the summer. The male displays brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate.
coastal backyard, attracted by feeders
The male goldfinches in our area are undergoing rapid change to breeding plumage now. This one has almost completed its molt, while most others are just beginning.

Ah, I love finches. :)
Just noticed the white feather on the branch. :)
Fantastic action shot!
Emma, Both Lesser and American Goldfinches are here year-round and are daily visitors to my feeders. It's been fun watching them molt. Some of the males are looking pretty scraggly right now, but every day we see a little more yellow showing.
Quite surprising that you spotted this one in California! i must stay on the look out for one.
March is the month for the pacific migration. Heard that the hooded orioles and orange headed yellow warblers have been spotted.
