Honey Bee

Apis mellifera

Description:

A highly Social insect with distinct casts and divisions of labour. Honey bees play a vital role in the pollenation of the worlds flowering plants and so help in food production. In some cases, sucessfull honey bee populations put pressure on more effecient local pollenators and have been seen to reduce the population of wild flowers. Their nests are built in cavities of trees, rocks or avery boxes and build parallel and vertical combs with two layers of hexagonal cells.

Habitat:

A diverse habitat range from agricultural land to forest and grassland.

Notes:

In 2006, a damaging phenomenon to bee populations was named as Colony collapse disorder (CCD) and happens when the vast majority of worker bees dissapear from a colony leaving plenty of food, the queen and a few nurse bees to care for larvae. The disappearences have happened before in Aviary history, but this time it happened en mass throughout America and Europe and brought to light how import to agricultural honey bees were. Without these hard working pollenators, yeilds were at risk and the world began to panic. Many causes have been presented from mites, infections, enviromental loss, pesticides and malnutrition but none have been agreed on. Thankfuly, in late 2017, CCD was begining to happen less and less and bee populations are on the rise.
