A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Lybius guifsobalito
Medium sized barbet, about 15 - 16 cm in length. Mainly black with red crown, face and chest; and black massive 'barbet' type bill. It also sports white-edged wing coverts (diagnostic).
Uncommon resident, endemic to East Africa and thinly distributed. Here, in a savanna and open acacia woodland of Abidjatta-Shalla National Natural Reserve. This beautiful reserve consists of two lakes of the Rift Valley lakes system; and is situated on altitude of 1500m and 2000m. Beside the two lakes, the park is mainly savanna and open acacia woodland, with other thorny shrubs and euphorbias; very rich in birdlife (over 300 species recorded) but not so much in other wildlife.
It seems it was another lifer for me and for Project NOAH... the interesting thing is that I just identified these two fellas; thanks to a photo that came out in one of the Facebook forums (African Bird Club). Which means that this picture was sitting in my Non-IDed folder for at least 8 or 9 years (since I scanned it...) and another 7 to 8 years in a carton box fulfilling the same fonction...
