African penguin. According to a brochure at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland, the Maryland Zoo is a world-renowned expert in the African Penguin Species Survival Plan. They run one of the most successful African penguin breeding programs in the world and are experts at caring and providing medically for the birds. They also work with other zoos and aquariums to disseminate knowledge and to protect and support the species. Penguins are flightless with wings that are stiffened and flattened into flippers. They have distinctive pink patches of skin above the eyes and a black facial mask. The body upperparts are black and the underparts are white which are spotted and marked with a black band. The pink gland above their eyes helps them to cope with changing temperatures. Feeds primarily on fish and squid. The African penguin is classified as endangered.

These African penguins live in a brand new exhibit at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland.
