Mourning Cloak

Nymphalis antiopa

Description:

My NWF Submission, the Mourning Cloak butterfly is amazing as it overwinters as an adult. The Mourning Cloak basically goes into a suspended animation state, where they freeze just about anywhere they can squeeze into to protect them from predators.

Habitat:

Just as long as there are larval host plants around, the Mourning Cloak isn't picky about habitat and are quite widespread.
