Nerodia fasciata fasciata
These are photographs of a snake molt -- the end (discarded) product of the snake's extraordinary ecdysis process, where and when a snake sheds its scales, often in its entirety and in one piece. We didn't see the snake molting and likely missed it by only an hour or two; the molted scales were extremely fresh. This is probably a species of Nerodia and given the location and size, likely Nerodia fasciata fasciata, the southern banded watersnake. The snakes process of ecdysis is an extraordinarily well-honed and impressive one. [janson jones http://dusttracks.com]

Alas, the days before bulk digital photography!!! Heh. I know the feeling. Truly, I do!
We have found several snake molts under our furnace - a couple were rat snake I think but the other was a rattler of some kind. Annoyingly (being pre-PN) I didn't take any photos!
