Eastern Banjo (Pobblebonk) Frog eastern BANJO) FROG or southern bullfrog Limnodynastes means “lord of the marshes” named after the French zoologist, A. Dumeril A rather stout looking frog varying from 6-8cm in size. Its colour ranges from pale grey to olive green, dark brown or black with irregular dark marking on its back and white or yellow in the groin. The males call is a single banjo-like “bonk” repeated at intervals. One frog calling usually triggers several nearby frogs to call in rapid succession, the unison sounding like “pobblebonk’, hence its common name.
This common and widespread burrowing frog can be located in most habitats. It is often found congregating in large numbers at night, especially after rain.
