A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
I love that there a birds called grackles! We have a bird here in Australia that used to to think of a “grackles” because they mutter in a way that sounds like “grackle grackle grackle!”. I think they’re friar birds. And now I have to look up what actual grackles say.
Hi! Yes these are termite mounds. They can get very large depending on the age of the colony and are really quite complex.

How wickedly… gothic. I love it, but also because of course, why wouldn’t there be such a thing? Insects v plants is a long, long story. Thanks for sharing this cool, weird thing!
Ps. I never thought to “spot” these as they are so common, but decided they are such a feature of wildlife here that it makes sense even if its just for me to look up exactly what they are. I had already deduced that I have the long nest ones, not the upside down cone nest ones. I’m assuming they must be territorial?
Haha! Beautiful mantis! And yes, probably good idea to feed the cats and let her do her thing.
Yes lots of floods especially right where it is growing!
Aha! I have seen these on she oaks in the park I walk my dog and always assumed it was something’s egg sack or such, and I’m oddly gratified that not only is this correct but it’s name is so very accurate! Thanks.
Ah, thanks! It did rather remind me of the little green lacewings (ruby eyed?) I see here too.
