The caterpillar is being parasitized by wasp eggs laid on its back. It most likely is paralyzed but still alive. Gruesome eh?

It is indeed the mallow without the petals, just the reproductive bits. I thought it was neat.

We got the close up shot when I went with a group osprey banding the chicks. These are two of the larger juvenile birds.

Yeah, I thought garter, but it's in the area where I see water snakes very commonly. That's the only picture. Should I change the ID?
