A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Actually, I was able to pick this little guy up right off the bank. I was wondering why he was so lethargic when I realized he only had 3 legs! Apparently, they are even prone to nipping at each other. I'm guessing his leg was bitten of by another soft shell or a predator of some kind. I took him home, fattened him up, and treated his leg until it healed. I released him after about a month of rehabilitation. He's a lucky little guy! And once he felt better, yes, he tried to bite me several times. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!
This is just a guess, but could this guy be in the family Limnephilidae genus pycnopsyche?
Lisa, I added a little more info. Isn't she gorgeous! This is actually the third one I have seen in my life. I am an environmental scientist for the state, and I ran across her while collecting samples. I have a nice head shot that won best in show in a photography contest that I will add soon.
You're right! I didn't see the white spot in front of his eye at first. Thanks!
I believe this might be a Barking Tree Frog rather than a Green Tree Frog. What'dya think? The Barking Tree Frogs are much harder to find than the green, so kudos!
I think it's Lobelia siphilitica (blue cardinal flower) after all. However, I don't think the leaves in the fourth picture belong to the plant in question. I think they were perhaps just in the shot by accident. Either way, beautiful pictures!
