Absolutely stunning creature... nice shot
I believe this is in the Order Opiliones, so, not technically a spider, but in the same Class (Arachnida) with spiders which are in the Order Araneae.
Given the short antennae this is more likely a grasshopper than a katydid or cricket
Anyone who might be able to verify species of Pisauridae Dolomedes ... It appears to match closely in pattern and size. However, i cannot find a species description to match the yellow/mustard stripes on the cephalothorax and the two black dots at the anterior of the abdomen (and the stripes do not continue from the cephalothorax to the abdomen). So, any help would be appreciated.
The male tried to draw us away from the nest by flying short distances away. Did not make any moves to drive us off. we were 3 persons in dugout canoe on an oxbow lake covered with weeds and moved extremely slowly so we likely didn't trigger the most aggressive responses.
An amazing bird, seen a one stoop a couple time and take another bird mid-air, amazing to watch.
