Nearly 300 names have been documented for ʻuala (sweet potato) varieties in Hawaiʻi alone! Yet the current status of traditional Hawaiian ʻuala varieties is poorly understood, and many of the ones being kept alive in botanical collections have not been matched (by trait) to recorded names and descriptions. This goal of this mission is to document and map various ʻuala varieties in gardens and remnant populations before they are lost to us forever. To all farmers, gardeners, observers- please share pictures of your varieties and any information you have on their names and origins-- where you obtained your original planting material-- so we might trace back to known accession records, learn something new, and reconnect our ʻuala with their names.
