Your help is needed to enhance current understanding regarding the distribution of an invasive tree, English holly, that is spreading through natural areas in western Washington and beyond.
English holly (Ilex aquifolium) is a shade-tolerant, evergreen shrub / small tree native to Europe and North Africa. It is becoming increasingly common in Western Washington forests, with its spread and potentially negative impacts to native ecosystem functions and habitat value causing concern among land managers and ecologists.
The presence of holly in PNW natural areas has been known to land managers for a considerable time, but its ecology in a PNW context has only recently begun to be investigated by ecologists. The extent of the distribution of holly, the variety of habitats in which it is present, and its level of presence in remote areas far from human settlement are important questions that this mission can shed some light on!
