Loggerhead Shrike

Lanius ludovicianus

Description:

Was happy to spot this beauty for the first time on my morning hike. This medium sized bird had a bold, black mask across the eyes, a pale breast and tray top and back.

Habitat:

Chaparral at Daley Ranch. This one was about 400 feet from us so these are heavily cropped images from a macro lens.

Notes:

"A small gray, black, and white bird of open areas, the Loggerhead Shrike hardly appears to be a predator. But it uses its hooked beak to kill insects, lizards, mice, and birds, and then impales them on thorns to hold them while it rips them apart. "
