Spiny Redberry

Rhamnus crocea

This is a 3+ foot high shrub. It has red beries and small dark green spiny leaves.

This plant has a limited range in the US Southwest. This one was spotted at Torrey Pines Reserve on bluffs overlooking the Pacific.

The berries were used for food by Native American inhabitants of this region. And that's Ranger Cindy Bingham-Keiser's hand for scale in the last picture.
