Bald Eagle

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Notes:

We were at a large lake with bluffs on either side...these two juvenile Bald Eagles danced in the air right above us! We watched their playful flight for about 10 minutes and they never separated! It was magical! They were far above us though, and even with a 270 lens, they're not very clear...I've cropped them very close. Their silhouettes are very striking though!

cool....that first photo looks a little like an M.C. Escher drawing...the space between the eagles sort of looks like an eagle flying the other way.

Thanks, Kat...yes I agree...I do try to take my camera with me all the time...Seems like more of my photos are taken by me pulling to the side of the road when something catches my eye!! ;-)

Thanks, Liam...no worries at all!! Just glad the ID is correct - a little disgusted at my blunder! ;-) It doesn't make the sighting any less spectacular for me!! Sibs having fun...I can handle that!!

Sorry, Christy, I really hate raining on your parade. :(
But yes, I think these are most likely siblings, first years.

Arrgh!! Liam, I don't doubt you for a second!! These guys were so far away, and I had to crop them a lot...and they seemed to be doing courtship flights!! I was so surprised to see Golden's there instead of Bald's! I've gotten baby bald's wrong before...I tried arguing with you!! ;-) I work up close and personal with the raptors...at a rehab facility and I'm within a dozen feet of them...then they're easy to ID!! I very rarely see them flying (or perched in a tree!!). Since they're so dark, probably first years?? And maybe they were siblings playing?? I guess we'll never know!! Thanks...I'll change it...and the story!! Good to know they WERE bald's...where they should be...next to a big lake!! (don't hesitate to ever correct me!!) (and I should know my eagle plumage!!!) ;-)

Also, I should add, Golden Eagles show golden napes in all plumages.

Christy, I know you work with raptors a lot and have lots of experience, but are you sure these are Golden Eagles? They look like juvenile Bald Eagles to me based on the white axillaries and the honking bills (see photo 5).
