Bird Dropping Moth

Tarachidia sp.

Description:

Lives up to its name! Sitting on a branch with its wings tucked up, it looks just like bird poo! Found this one with another right next to it (possibly mating; couldn't tell). Thought the white, lumpy, brown-flecked mass on the thin branch was bird droppings, but when I reached for the branch, one flew away. They looked so convincing that I was startled to see the thing move! The other moth's usual response when I was getting close was not to fly away but to stay still and look like bird poo. Very cool adaptation, and a funny one.

Habitat:

Woods behind house. Found near edge of woods, on the branch of a bush, about two feet from the ground.
