Bumble Bee Queen

Description:

Queen observed emerging from winter hibernation. Very early for this area, but we were having extremely warm weather for this time of year. Sunny - 72°F.

Habitat:

Canada - Mexico. Mountain-meadow, forest, grassland, semi-desert. Nests under ground.

misako, only fertilized queens overwinter. They emerge from an overwintering nest in the spring & seek out a new nesting spot to lay their eggs.

@Small Wonders: how do you know it is a queen? I am just curious to know.

Very nice! I was lucky to find a recently emerged queen last month - a great photo opportunity as she clung to the same stem for over half an hour presumably warming herself up to fly!
