Long-tailed Duck (Oldsquaw)

Description:

The long tail is just visible in the water on photo #1.

Habitat:

Breeds across the extreme north of the continent and winters on the west coast but is quite uncommon.

Notes:

These are the first photos I have ever taken of this duck. Really hard to get unless you are on a boat. These are still in winter plumage.

I always look for them when I am out winter birding by the ocean but at Semiahmoo Resort in Blaine, Washington, they were right in Drayton Harbour for a while. Wonderful!

Such neat birds. I've only seen them a few times in California as rarities.
