Autumn red-winged Grasshopper

Description:

Almost completely black grasshopper with some white on the femur and a grayish pronotum. Individuals can be completely black, dark brown or speckled with paler colors. It gets its common name from its red hind wings, which are only seen during flight.

Habitat:

Spotted in Pine Springs Canyon in the Guadalupe Mountain foothills (elev. 5900 ft. a.s.l.). This is a late season grasshopper that prefers open sunny areas like this gravely dry creek bed.
