A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Crotalus oreganus helleri
Young brown snake with dark patches that are surrounded completely by light coloring. The head is triangular and wider than the body as all rattlesnakes are. Being a rattlesnake, this means it is venomous. There is a black diagonal stripe on each side of the face that crosses the eye. There is a light yellow colored rattle on the end of the tail that will fade in color as it ages. This snake had 3 buttons. Common myth is the number of buttons determines the snakes age. This is incorrect as buttons snap off periodically.
Was in our backyard that has a mix of chaparral and oak woodland. We caught it and relocated it to an uninhabited field nearby. This species is found along the coast of Southern California to Baja California.
The species Western Rattlesnake is found along the west coast of Baja California to British Columbia.
