African bush elephant

Loxodonta africana

Description:

Small family of five elephants, 3 adults and two calves - for at least what we were able to see.

Habitat:

Seen in Kunene region of Namibia (northwest), in arid acacia tree-and-shrub landscape. The region is still very dry (but still magnificent and rich in wildlife) at the moment, following a three-year dry-spell.

Notes:

Also known as African savannah elephant.

Ever since I saw a documentary where a matriarch elephant recognizes and picks up the skull of her predecessor while the others cluster around to caress it, I have felt extra love for them.
