Native Drone Fly

Eristalinus punctulatus

Description:

This fly was as big as a bee but had more of a drone than a buzz when it flew. The thorax was striped and the abdomen looked much like other syrphids with a dark background and bright yellow patches.
The eyes were the most interesting part of this colourful big bee - they were yellow with minute red spots.

Habitat:

spotted around tea-tree flowers ( Leptospermum scoparium) in a park.

Notes:

The adults feed on nectar.
I got a better shot of the eyes but not the body in my previous spotting. So this was a really pleasant surprise.
