Description:

Upright, hairy annual or biennial, to 16in. Clump forming. Bracts and flowers form dense spikes. Blooms March to May. There are a number of other Texas species with various other colors.

Habitat:

In full sun, in prairies, open grasslands, open abandoned areas, roadsides.

Notes:

Roots of plants grow until the touch roots of other plants, often grasses, which they penetrate. The host plant then provide a portion of the nutrients the paintbrush needs.

This was growing in a meadow surrounded by juniper trees, on what used to be an old airfield.
