Wood Duck

Aix sponsa

Habitat:

They nest in holes formerly owned or created by woodpeckers.

Notes:

There were three pairs of Wood Ducks in the Bird Sanctuary near Belmont Harbor along Lake Michigan in Chicago. I happened to spot a tree with nine Northern Flickers, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a Red-bellied Woodpecker. The gray clouds obscured taking a distinct picture, and I was amazed to see this grouping...as at first glance I expected a tree full of Starlings.
