Wood Duck

Aix sponsa

They nest in holes formerly owned or created by woodpeckers.

There were three pairs of Wood Ducks in the Bird Sanctuary near Belmont Harbor along Lake Michigan in Chicago. I happened to spot a tree with nine Northern Flickers, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a Red-bellied Woodpecker. The gray clouds obscured taking a distinct picture, and I was amazed to see this at first glance I expected a tree full of Starlings.
