Yucca plant bug

Halticotoma valida

Description:

Tiny black insect with a red head. Orange legs. When the sunlight shines on the black part of the insect, it has a shimmery green color. (Sadly, of course I could not capture this with my iPhone camera.)

Habitat:

All over this plant. These bugs are also covering all the other plants of the same species in this one area. They're not on any other kind of plants in the area. Why might this be?

Thanks for the tip Peter. I'd heard of the Olloclip but hadn't checked them out. The only thing stopping me from ordering something like this right now is that I use a case on my phone, and nothing seems compatible with that. It would be a pain to have to remove the case every time I wanted to take a macro.

The Photojojo lens looks pretty awesome. I've been using an Olloclip macro lens with my iPhone 4 and have had some pretty awesome results.

I like the Olloclip because it includes a wide angle and fish eye lens along with the macro, in an all-in-one unit http://olloclip.com. It looks like the Photojojo kit is three separate lenses.

p.s. I have an iPhone 4s and have been considering getting a macro lens for it: http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/c... It would help with insect shots, especially since I always carry my phone, but not my Nikon.

You're welcome! Glad I could find them for you. Looks like they are host specific, which explains why they weren't on anything else. I'm relieved to hear they aren't on YOUR Yucca plants!

Thanks for the identification! Thankfully these aren't my plants though.

The photos helped, thanks! You (unfortunately) have what appears to be Yucca Plant Bugs.

I added better photos. Unfortunately, I think this is the best my iPhone 4's camera can do because the insects are so small.

I can try to take some better photos.

That should have said "they are" not "their". =)

From the bend in the wings, I'd say their Miridae, a kind of plant bug. Not enough detail in the photos for a more specific ID though.
