House centipede

Scutigera coleoptrata

Description:

Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Class: Chilopoda Order: Scutigeromorpha Family: Scutigeridae Genus: Scutigera Species: S. coleoptrata Named by Linnaeus in 1758, typically a yellowish-grey centipede with up to 15 pairs of legs, insectivore that eats other insects and spiders, found in the bathroom of a house.

Habitat:

These centipedes need an environment that protects them from cold and dehydration. Most live outside under large rocks and piles of wood. They are also found in homes in basements, bathrooms, offices, bedrooms and dining rooms. It's most common to see them in the spring when the weather gets warmer and in the fall when the cold forces them to take shelter in houses.
