Green parrot Snake

Leptophis ahaetulla

Description:

Specimen of about 1.3 meters long, seen in a Garden in Tortuguero Costa Rica. This is a thin, very long and bright green snake. Males can reach a total length of 2.2 meters, Females are smaller, about 1.9 meters. The head is distinct from the neck, eyes are large with yellow irises, pupils are round. It has 15 rows of dorsal scales at mid-body. The dorsal scales are keeled middle and lateral scales are smooth. Have an apical pore in the dorsal scales, the anal plate is divided and lacks loreal scale. This species is bright green above and light green below. The scales of the head and back are lined with black. The keels on the back are black, producing a series of small parallel lines along the body. The skin between the scales is yellow and is arranged as a series of indistinct blotches on the first two thirds of the body. The head is uniformly green. They can be found in rainforest gaps and dense vegetation, sometimes in bromeliads. The main food for this species is frogs. It is arboreal and diurnal habits, and spends a lot of time in the canopy where it is confused with the branches and leaves
