Chipping Sparrow

Spizella passerina

Description:

Brown new world sparrow. Closer to the size of an American goldfinch, if not possibly smaller. Pinkish feet and a matching bill that is a little darker on the top than compared to the bottom. Belly is buff and wings are not unlike House sparrows. Top of head comes in a rusty red or a darker striped red and with variations in between. It seems that perhaps in winter they go feeding in small flocks, but I'm not certain of this.

Habitat:

Suburban, with a mixture of old trees, open lawns, and shrub filled areas.

Notes:

They so far have only seemed to come to the feeders during the winter and spring. I know that they are supposed to live here year round, so perhaps they just move on to other preferrable food sources once they become avaliable.
