Horned lark

Eremophila alpestris

Description:

Horned larks are small songbirds that are easily recognized by the black and yellow patterns on their head. They have brown wings and backs. They are pale grey underneath. They have short, thin bills, short necks, and rounded heads. There are several different subspecies.

Habitat:

Spotted in sand dunes next to Smiley Lagoon along the San Diego River. This was a flock of about 8 birds. The last pictures have four of them as they are using vegetation debris to use as a cover in the sand dunes.
