Mealy blue sage

Salvia farinacea

Description:

Upright to sprawling hairy perennial, to 3 ft. Stems are 4 sided and generally numerous and clump forming. Leaves are either soft, wide, and green, or narrow and silvery, simple and opposite, with wavy to coarsely saw-toothed edge. Flowers are blue, blue-violet to purple, or white, in dense whorls on tall naked stalks. Silver fuzz covering both stems and leaves is the "mealiness" that gives the plant its name.

Habitat:

Sun to part shade. Dry, often rocky calcareous or chalky soils. Does well in garden soils.

There are many cultivars of this plant.
