The Duchess Protea is large, upright shrub. The leaves are greyish green. The flower head is large: ~120mm high - ~120mm large. The floral bracts are pink to purple spoon-shaped. The flowers are massed in the center of the head before opening, showing a dark purple red cap.
Swartberg mountain thicket vegetation. 98% of wild proteas are found in South Africa, the remaining 2% in Kenya.
Also called Broad-leaf Sugarbush.

aah man, ok. Yes so when you visit RSA again! ;)
I would love to! But i moved to Canada, so it will be difficult to spot that one.
I am still loving Southern Africa as you could see: I am always trying to help ID any species!
I wish you luck for that spoting. If I come back I will track that one for sure!

Hi NoahC, if you come across a zebra cockroach - see link- endemic to fynbos, please take some pics, there are very few pictures and info out there about them and only 7 species are known! thanks
have to love the names of these royal flowers!
@Ashish: some of the roads follow the riverbanks. Valleys are extremely narrow but gorgeous. The other roads climb the mountains. Sceneries are wonderful. Anyway, all are dirt roads.
Location looked to be wonderful. Are roads made along with riverbanks..?
I loved seeing the Proteas when we visited South Africa.
Beautiful!
