Nests in swift inland streams of northwestern North America, winters along the coast. Formerly nested in the streams of the Sierra Nevada until the 1920's. Possible recolonization taking place in that area?

lovely duck.
There is so much similarity in some of the markings between wood duck and hooded merganser.
I love how photo #2 shows the symetrical markings on the face!
