Sigara sp.
Water boatmen are slightly flattened and elongate. Two hind pairs of legs are oar-shaped, formed by specialized hairs. You can see these paddles in action in the last photograph. Adults are about 3-11 mm (3/16 to 3/8 inch) in length.
Ponds and lakes.
I'm trying something new photographically. I captured this water boatman and put him temporarily in a very thin aquarium. I built the aquarium last week. It's only about 2 cm (1 in) in thick so as to confine small rapidly-swimming insects and fish. I used flash on these photos and a macro lens. I still have to find a way of reducing suspended solids so they are not floating about in the water. I'm pleased with the setup though. Will just need to find more time to adjust lighting, etc.
