Spotting

Description:

White mold on underside of leaves.

Habitat:

Wild lilac bush in chaparral area along trail. This is the same bush that the Western Tussock caterpillar was spotted last week.

It is possible that the white fluff is actually of arthropod origin. There are some types of aphids and scale insects that can produce a coating of wax that looks somewhat fuzzy. That being said, I am not sure about this either. Just wanted to add that to give a bit more thought to this. :-)

The plant is "wild Lilac", one of the ceanothus species but I don't know what the white stuff is.
