Short-eared Owl

Asio flammeus

Description:

Owls belonging to genus Asio are known as the eared owls, as they have tufts of feathers resembling mammalian ears. These "ear" tufts may or may not be visible. Asio flammeus will display its tufts when in a defensive pose. However, its very short tufts are usually not visible. The yellow-orange eyes of A. flammeus are exaggerated by black rings encircling each eye, giving the appearance of them wearing Mascara, and large, whitish disks of plumage surrounding the eyes like a mask. . The word flammeus is Latin for "flaming, or the color of fire". (Wikipedia)

Habitat:

The Short-eared Owl is found in open country and grasslands.

Notes:

At Doñana Natural Park, we could see 6 short-eared owls and 7 barn owls, from that afternoon to night. It was amazing.

Si vais a Doñana os puedo decir la zona exacta donde se pueden ver. Es bastante fácil de observar esta especie y la lechuza común

Thanks for your comments! It was really exciting for us because we love owls and they are very difficult to see where we live :)

I would love to see that! so many owls at once. This winter I did see 37 Snowy Owls at once but there were so many photographers pestering these starving birds that I didn't get any close shots. I love your pics because they show a respect for the owl.
