This prickly shrub grows in profusion in Canada and is readily recognized by most people in western Canada. It is the provincial flower of Alberta, but it is also abundant in British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Hardy, resilient, fairly heat tolerant (although the blooms are prone to color-fading in the sun), the wild rose has a light yet distinctive, full-bodied fragrance. If the conditions are right to give the fruits (rosehips) flavor and the plant has not picked up a pest, the fruits can be made into jam, although European varieties are invariably better for this.
