Fouquieria splendens

Description:

Desert shrub with tall, vertical, spiny, branches growing from root crown. Usually leafless except after rains. Flowers are bright red and tubular in clusters at branch tips.

Habitat:

Needs well drained soil. Heat and drought tolerant. Sun to part shade.

Notes:

Cut stems set in the ground will eventually take root. Flowers and seeds are edible, and several indian tribes used them.
