Carpodacus mexicanus
Small finch with the classic streaking, brown wings & back. Males have bright plumage on head, breast, & rump, ranging from red to yellow, depending on it's diet. Both sexes tails are square-tipped. This species also has slightly curved beaks.
North American urban & suburban areas. They are also sighted in southern Canada & the Mexican state of Oaxaca. However, the species originated in Mexico & was introduced to the Northern US in the 1940s as an "exotic" housepet.
These cuties are nesting in a Blue Spruce outside our office window at the nursery. A welcomed distraction for the girls stuck inside at the phones.
