Spotting

Description:

Stocky, grey rodent. Five inch body. Long teeth. I think it is a vole, but not sure what type.

Habitat:

The burrow in the side of the earthen dam near where I live.

Notes:

Found this one, already dead, on a walk the other day.

I think you are correct, I think it is a vole of some kind. The feet are not webbed and the tail is not thick enough to be a muskrat. (I thought it was a muskrat too at first glance, possibly a juvenile.) Try researching vole species in your area! Here is a great link I found. You can google each specific specie to see if it looks like the one you found!

The burrow openings are actually on top of the dam, not in the water.

Too small for a muskrat, and the tail is short and smooth, not bushy like a muskrat's.

Possibly a muskrat?
