Platalea leucorodia
Has mainly white plumage and extraordinary bill. Bill often concealed in roosting birds. Breeding birds show yellow flush to breast and as base of bill. Legs long and black; bill long and flattened, with spoon-shaped tip. In flight, has long, bowed wings; head and neck extended, with legs trailing behind. Wings of adult white but those of juvenile are dark-tipped.
Favours shallow, coastal lagoons. Breeds locally in S Iberia and Greece. Widespread in E Mediterranean in winter.
