these wasps ignore passers-by unless one comes within a critical distance (about 50 - 75 cms) of the nest and then they dart out and sting the offending intruder immediately (often on the face as that tends to be the closest). The sting is instantly painful but recedes rapidly over 5 to 10 minutes with no residual after affects
