Paper wasp comb / nest

Ropalidia sp

Description:

small wafer-like wasp nest, about 8 x 3 cm and 5mm thick, suspended by a small 'stalk' from the tip of a set of horns in an open sided storage area. The cells of the comb are more visible from below (photo 3)

Habitat:

small rural community in tree / bush savanna area

Notes:

these wasps ignore passers-by unless one comes within a critical distance (about 50 - 75 cms) of the nest and then they dart out and sting the offending intruder immediately (often on the face as that tends to be the closest). The sting is instantly painful but recedes rapidly over 5 to 10 minutes with no residual after affects
