Widow Skimmer

Libellula luctuosa

An adult male widow skimmer I found in my garden. Note the white stripping on the wings, the females and juveniles lack these. They get their name because unlike other dragonflies, the males do not stay with the females after egg laying.

Found all over the US except the Rocky Mountain region, down into Mexico and up into parts of Canada. Main habitat includes ponds and lakes, sometimes streams, and can sometimes be found far away from water.
