Marsh Marigold

Caltha palustris

Description:

Actually a member of the buttercup family, the marsh marigold is one of the UK's oldest native plants, having been here since before the last ice age. They are quite early to start flowering, usually in March. They are identified by the large round, sometimes kidney shaped, leaves that have bluntly serrated edges.

Habitat:

They grow in wet areas like ponds, fens and ditches.

Notes:

These particular flowers were growing around the edge of a pond in the middle of a wet meadow in Colchester, Essex.
