Brown Birch Bolete

Leccinum scabrum

Description:

Very young specimen of L. scabrum coming up in the yard. These guys fruit from June to October and occur in mycorrhizal association with birch trees. This means they share a symbiosis with the tree. There is some debate on the edibility of this mushroom. Some state it edible but not worthwhile while other places like New England and the Rockies say to eat it with caution.

Habitat:

The brown birch bolete was native to Europe naturally but has been introduced almost worldwide. Most recently in Australia and New Zealand in higher numbers.
