Black-tailed Godwit (summer)

Limosa limosa

I uploaded a couple of spottings of this bird in the winter (, and as you can see it is a pale imitation of the bird in summer plumage. Most godwits are winter visitors to the UK, and because I no longer saw the godwits at the usual spot I saw them over winter, I assumed that they had returned to their breeding grounds. It turns out Essex actually has a residential population of godwits, so I guess they moved further up the river once the cold weather left (don't know why?).

Estuaries and coastal lagoons.

These were spotted along the Colne River, but no longer in Colchester. They were further down the river, in Wivenhoe.
